George R. Petrich Jr.

George Petrich, 85, Sheldon, ND passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, September 6, 2016.

He was born on July 21, 1931, to George and Anne Petrich and grew up on a farm east of Sheldon.  He graduated from Enderlin High School in 1949 and went on to attend the North Dakota Agricultural College, where he was a member of the football team.  In 1950, he left college early when his father became ill to take over the farm.  In 1953, he married Carol Discher and started their farmstead east of Sheldon. George retired in 1992, but continued to enjoy being a part of the family operation through his daughter, Kathi, and her husband, Steve.

He served on the ASCS Board, Coburn Township Board and Township Constable, Sheldon Farmer’s Elevator Board, ND Township Officers Association Board, Masonic Lodge and served on the Emmanuel Methodist Church Board.  In 2012, he was honored by receiving the 2012 Ransom County Agriculturalist of the Year award.

George was a lifetime resident of Ransom County who enjoyed everything about the land. He especially enjoyed sharing his passion for hunting, fishing, and farming with his children and grandchildren. He loved spending time with his family and could always be found enjoying all of his grandchildren’s events. George was very proud of his family and always had a story to share about them.

George is survived by his children, Deb (Ken) Laber, Fargo, ND, Rick (Pat) Petrich, St. Michael, MN, Sue Luedtke, Polk City, IA, Kathi (Steve) Luther, Enderlin, ND; grandchildren, Justin (Mayme) Petrich, Christopher (Rachel) Petrich, Jared (Emily) Petrich, Jason Luedtke, Karla (Rick) Skwira, Andrea (Brandon) Jackson, and Matthew Luther; great grandchildren, Sydney and George Petrich, Avery and Quinn Skwira and Irene Jackson; sister-in-law, Arla Mae Discher; four nieces and a nephew and special friend, Clare Beilke.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Petrich; brother, Robert Petrich; son-in-law, Roy Luedtke; and grandson, Jake Laber.
