Darlene (Martenson) Freeberg, 81, Lisbon, North Dakota passed away at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo on Sunday, December 9, 2018.
Darlene Renae Martenson was born in Sisseton, South Dakota on October 16, 1937. She was the daughter of Arthur and Ragna (Hanson) Martenson. She grew up in Sisseton and graduated from high school in 1955. After graduation, she moved to Minneapolis and worked various jobs and enjoyed playing softball. Darlene married Leonard Freeberg on January 2, 1960 during a blizzard. They lived on a farm near Lisbon. It was a 100% family farm and she was 100% involved. They raised three children, Patrick, Dean and Lenae.
Darlene is remembered for her warm smile and her love of family and friends. She was the caretaker of the family, whether it was sending cards, texts, calls or special facebook messages. Her love of others made her a favorite of many.
She enjoyed her grand and great grandchildren immensely. Other favorites were reading, playing cards and pictures of her family. People always looked forward to her annual Christmas poem. Darlene was a part of the Aliceton pinochle card club, homemakers club and St. Aloysius Altar Society for many years. She was the director of the CCD program at St. Aloysius and loved organizing the annual Christmas program.
Darlene is survived by her husband of 58 years, Leonard; three children, Patrick (Daria) Freeberg of Lisbon, ND; Dean (Rhonda) Freeberg of Fargo, ND; Lenae (Tony) Ambrose of West Fargo, ND; eight grandchildren, Mallory (Tyler) Keller, Alyssa (Chad) Campion, Karli (Ricky) Roman, Erika, Amy and Nicole Freeberg, Katie and Nathan Ambrose; great-grandchildren, McKenna, Carter, Kenzley and baby on the way Keller, Berkley and Avery Campion, Milani and baby on the way Roman; her brothers, Bob (Cheryl), Jim and Dennis (Barb) Martenson; sisters-in-law, Arleen and Janis Martenson; in-laws, Irene Tocci, John Fiandaca, Keith and Gerry Freeberg, Dwight Tracy and many nieces and nephews.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, an infant baby girl, and her siblings, Jeanette, Marlys, Neil, Galen and Randene.
Interment: St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, Lisbon, ND
