Janice E. Herbranson, 85 of Hankinson, North Dakota, formerly of McLeod, North Dakota died Friday, September 20, 2019 at St. Gerard’s Community Nursing Home, Hankinson, North Dakota.
Janice was born on June 17, 1934, the daughter of George and Alida (Glende) Helmer in Cooperstown, North Dakota. She was raised and educated in Cooperstown through 8th Grade. She then moved to Fargo to attend Oak Grove High School. After graduated from high school she attended Moorhead State and received her teaching degree. Her first teaching job was at Sheyenne Country School.
Janice was united in marriage to Stanley Herbranson on October 8, 1953 at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Leonard. They made their home in rural McLeod. She started teaching at Salund School in Mcleod. After Stanley’s death due to a plane crash in 1971, Janice moved to McLeod and operated the Sand Dune Saloon and eventually purchased the saloon in 1974. She also continued to teach at the school until 1986, when it closed for two years and she moved to Texas and taught there until 1988 when she returned to Salund School when it opened once again. Janice continued to teach until her retirement in 2002.
Janice enjoyed Democratic politics and loved to visit with her family and friends.
Janice is survived by her three sons, Jeff of McLeod, ND; Mark of Enderlin, ND and Tim of Roberts, MT; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one brother, Jimmy (Carol) Helmer of Hannaford, ND; numerous nieces and nephews.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Stanley (1971), son, Dean, sister, Marlys Snyder, daughter-in-law, Pam Herbranson.
