Leonard Wayne Kutz

Leonard Wayne Kutz 90, of Lisbon, North Dakota died Friday, September 13, 2019 at the North Dakota Veterans Home, Lisbon, North Dakota.

Leonard was born on March 23, 1929 the son of Theodore and Myrtle (Cope) Kutz in Sykeston, North Dakota. He was raised and educated in Sykeston. In 1942, his family moved to California and later returned to North Dakota in 1945 and Leonard farmed with his father until joining the United States Army in 1951. After his honorable discharge in 1953, Leonard began working for CFWE as a heavy equipment operator. They built roads, bridges and dams in SD, TX, CO and CA. Leonard married Bobbie Sherwood in 1954.  

Leonard was a staunch promoter and member of the Operating Engineers Local 3 and was proud and pleased when his niece, Faith Ruther followed in his footsteps and joined Operating Engineers Local 49. Leonard was also proud to have taught three of his nephews (Mark, Jamie and Loren) how to operate heavy equipment. Leonard married Laura McGregor in 1971.

After his retirement in 1992, Leonard moved to Florence, Arizona where he enjoyed hiking and golfing. He also loved to travel and took several trips to Alaska and fishing trips to Yellow Knife, Canada. Leonard always was one to want to right an injustice, held a one-man protest at a casino, when a patron was denied her winnings.

Leonard loved family holiday gatherings and for many years made a trip to Madera, California to spend Thanksgiving with his brother and sister-in-law, Ted (Lillian) and their family.

Leonard is survived by his sisters, Beverly (Gary) Linafelter of Arizona City, AZ; Amelia (Larry) Boettcher of Cambridge, MN; Sandra (Craig) Poulsen of Oberon, ND; brother, Wilbur (Dawn) Bowden, ND; nieces and nephews, Jill, Jacky, Loren, Janis, Jody, Karen, Brian, Kim, Jeff, Jamie, Ray, Susan, Shannon, Sarah, Warren, Bob, Jason and Jed; numerous great nieces and nephews.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters-in-law, Theodore Jr. (Lillian) Kutz, William (Mary Jane) Kutz, David Kutz, sister and brother-in-law, Frances (Raymond) Richter, nephews, Donald and Mark Hargens.
