Pauline Mary (Juhlke) Lee

 Pauline Mary Juhlke Lee, formerly of Gwinner, ND, passed away peacefully at the age of 101, at Parkside Lutheran Home in Lisbon, ND, on January 15, 2020. Pauline was born on March 16, 1918, to Cora and Frank Juhlke in Arvilla, ND. She attended the one room schoolhouse across the road from the family farm in Hegton Township for her elementary schooling followed by two years of high school in Arvilla and two years of high school in Larimore, ND. Pauline then advanced her education by graduating from North Dakota Agricultural College (renamed North Dakota State University) earning a degree in Home Economics with a Science minor in 1940. Additional class work was completed in Valley City, ND, to earn accreditation for teaching English and library sciences. 

 On March 25, 1942, Pauline married Daniel Sander Lee of Gwinner. Their marriage was blessed with five children: Sandra Pauline Chapin (Robert) of Greeley, CO; Mary Dorine Edman (John) of Gwinner; Paula Diane Miller (Michael) of Frankfort, IL; Marva Joy Fairchild (Timothy) of International Falls, MN; and Daniel Sander Lee, Jr.

 Before college graduation, Pauline worked as a 4-H agent at Wheaton, MN, and following graduation she was an Associate County Extension Agent in Valley City where she traveled in Barnes County working with Homemaker and 4-H clubs. She taught practical skills including mattress making. While in Valley City, she initiated the women’s department at the North Dakota Winter Show. Pauline was employed as an Assistant State Supervisor of the WPA Feeding Program in Bismarck, ND, where she visited and monitored school lunch programs in 1942 and 1943. 

 During the war years, Pauline and her husband lived in the Carolinas and Florida until Dan was deployed overseas. Following the war years, they lived in in Carrington, ND, learning the grocery business before moving to Page, ND, where they were owner-operators of Lee’s Food Market for 8 years. The family moved to Gwinner in 1955 and assumed Dan’s father’s general insurance agency. It was in Gwinner where Pauline taught school for 14 years, first teaching junior high school for two years and then high school. At North Sargent High School, she taught English, biology, library, and wrote the curriculum to establish a home economics department in Gwinner which she instructed until her retirement in 1978. 

 Pauline was an active member of Gustaf Adolf Lutheran Church in Gwinner and had the distinction of being the first woman president of the congregation. She established and led the Teenage Mission Society at GA, and assumed leadership roles within her church family. She was also active in various civic and community groups and appreciated the advantages a smaller town offers for those roles. The city of Gwinner honored Pauline (Polly as they knew her by) as Citizen of the Year in 2002. Her hobbies included needlework, especially Hardanger embroidery, bowling, playing bridge, and golf. 

 Pauline was preceded in death by her husband Daniel, her parents, her son Dan Jr., her brothers Clifford and Paul Juhlke, her sisters Betty Trosen and Meryl Almos, and her grandson Charles Fairchild. She is survived by her four daughters; her sister Eleanor Swenson; her grandchildren, Edwin Chapin (Trinette), Laura Thurston (Brian), Amy Swanson, Mara Edman (Chris Angel), Nathaniel Miller (Kate), Melinda Randolph (Dennis), Rita Schille (Matthew), and Alexandra Breiland (Justin). She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Delaney and Dylan Chapin; Owen and Hazel Swanson; Ethan, Zachary, and Penelope Miller; William and Cora Randolph; and Josephine Schille. Pauline’s extended family includes numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church or to the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA).
