Wade Russell Buttke, 70, of Oakes, North Dakota died Saturday, March 23, 2019 at the North Dakota Veterans Home, Lisbon, North Dakota.

Wade was born on March 16, 1949, the son of Keith “Ike” and Violet (Pedersen) Buttke in Oakes, North Dakota. He graduated from Oakes High School in 1967. After high school, Wade attended NDSCS in Wahpeton, ND and graduated May 1969. Wade married Cynthia Honl September 4th, 1971 in Lidgerwood, ND.

Wade first entered military service on December 23rd, 1969 in the Army National Guard. He served the Guard as a Quarryman through December 22nd, 1976. On December 1st, 1978 he joined the “elite” ND Army National Guard unit of the 191st Military Police Guard Company in Mayville, ND, assigned as their Squad Leader and eventually assigned Motor Sergeant. On November 1st, 1981 he was reassigned to the 634th Service Company where he earned an Active Guard/Reserve position as Platoon Sergeant. August 1987, he served as Training Non-Commissioned Officer for Company A, 142nd Engineer Combat Battalion, Grand Forks, ND and then assigned in October 20th, 1990 as the battalion’s E8 Operations Non-Commissioned Officer. Wade served a two-year command assignment as the battalion’s First Sergeant from December 1st, 1992 through January 5th, 1994. On January 6th, 1994 he was reassigned back to the Operations Sergeant position where he served out the rest of his military service. Master Sergeant Wade Buttke retired after 27 faithful years of service on September 30th, 1999.

After Wade’s retirement from the military he worked as a carpenter. On March 6th, 2006 Wade married Brenda Holzer in Hillsboro, ND. Wade enjoyed spending time fishing, hunting and playing poker with his friends at the VA Home.

Wade is survived by his wife, Brenda Buttke of Stanley, ND; son, Jason Buttke of Fargo, ND; Daughters, Carrie (Jeremy) Pederson of Ray, ND; Alison Buttke of Fargo, ND; three grandchildren, Sydney and Avery Larson and Axel Herman; former spouse, Cindy Buttke of Fargo, ND; sister, Mona Visto of Oakes, ND; brother, Brad (Tiffany) Buttke of Oakes, ND; numerous nieces and nephews.

Wade was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Kent Buttke and fiancé Bridgette Taylor.

Interment: North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND
