February 12, 1929 – April 29, 2020
Arnold Bernard “Bernie” Schultz, age 91, of Mandan ND formerly of Lisbon, ND closed the final chapter of his story on April, 29, 2020 under the care of Hospice at St. Gabriel, Bismarck, ND.
Bernie was born on a farm near Lisbon, ND on February 12, 1929 to Arnold and Wilna (Wiltse) Schultz. He was the second of four children. He attended Buttzville Consolidated School for a few years before traveling with his family to Southern Minnesota. After a couple of years the Schultz’s moved back to Ransom County and Bernie finished high school in Lisbon, ND. After graduation he worked with his dad on the farm.
Bernie married Gwendolyn (Gwen) Sandstrom on June 1, 1952 at Fillmore Lutheran church in rural Enderlin, North Dakota. Bernie and Gwen farmed near Lisbon until 1980 when they moved to the Beulah, ND area where they worked in the coal gasification plant. In 1984 they moved to Yuma, AZ were they lived until 1986 before moving to California and then back to Lisbon, ND in 1994.

Bernie’s love of stories carried him through 91 years of an amazing life with family and friends. Every obstacle, even health issues as a child was an opportunity for sharing of a great story. There are many chapters in a 91 year-long story, but the following chapters were some of Bernie’s favorites.

Bernie is survived by his 5 children; Tom (Nance) [WA], Stan (Kari) [SD], Kathy Elijah [ND], Cindy (Rick) Olson [ND], and Terry Schultz (Sabine Schmid) [Switzerland], 12 grandchildren; Dylan(Alexis) Schultz [WA], Whitney Schultz [WA], Nicholas Schultz (Parish Mechling), Kris (Lisa) Elijah, Kinsey Elijah, Lisa (Brenner) Knapp, Matthew Olson, Flurin Staub, Nanina Staub, Sophia Staub, Laila Staub, Aita Staub. and 8 great grandchildren, 2 sisters Jeanne Speich and Nancy Fletcher, 4 sister-in-law’s, 3 brother-in-law’s and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gwen of 42 years, parents, brother Bob and his wife Lois, and 4 brothers-in-law.
Due to current events with the COVID-19 virus a private family graveside services will be held Saturday May 2, 2020 at 2pm Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon, ND
