Eileen M. Munkeby, 84 of Lisbon, North Dakota passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at CHI Lisbon Health surrounded by her family.
Eileen Madonna (Mahrer) Munkeby was born on July 27, 1935 to Henry and Marie (Mickels) Mahrer in Sargent County on the family farm near Forman, North Dakota. She started country school in Dunbar Township at the age of five. Eileen moved with her parents, five sisters and two brothers in the fall of 1941, to a 160 acre farm north of Lisbon. She entered the second grade at St. Aloysius Parochial School and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1952. Eileen was employed at Lisbon JC Penny Store from 1951-1954. She married Walter Munkeby on September 18, 1954 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Eileen and Walter made their home, worked the family farm and raised their five children near Fort Ransom. Eileen and Walter retired from farming and moved to Lisbon in 1996.
Eileen loved her family deeply and was a proud and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. Eileen loved going to her grandchildren’s events and was their biggest fan and supporter in whatever they pursued. Eileen loved her yard, her flowers and working the garden. Eileen was involved in community groups including the American Legion Auxiliary where she held a number of offices and for many years especially enjoyed chairing the gift shop for the veterans at the ND Veteran’s Home. Eileen was a longtime member of “SVACA” (Sheyenne Valley Arts and Crafts Association) and a member of the Ransom County Senior Center. Eileen’s interests also included: reading, golfing, card playing, holidays (especially Christmas), Dancing with the Stars and RFD TV on Saturday nights. Eileen was an extremely talented cook and baker and everyone in the family along with many in the community welcomed and enjoyed her talents often. Eileen was always active in her church in many ways. Alter Society, Eucharistic Minister, usher, reader, rosary leader and care of church linens. She was kind, loving, generous and grateful for what she had and was a wonderful blessing to us all. Eileen, you will be dearly missed, “For Sure.”
