Josephine "Jo" Julia Herbst

Jo (Josephine) Herbst of Lisbon, ND passed away in rural Walcott, ND on May 12, 2020 under the care of Hospice while surrounded by family.

Jo was born on May 26, 1942, the daughter of Joseph and Ceycelia (Ellenwine) Miller in LaPorte, IN and raised in Rolling Prairie IN. She graduated from Rolling Prairie IN High School in 1960. On July 16, 1960 she married Donald Wayne Herbst in LaPorte IN. She was employed by Spiegel’s catalog store and Rolling Prairie Elementary School. They lived in Rolling Prairie IN until April of 1976 when they moved to Lisbon ND with their family.

While in Lisbon Jo worked many years the Sears Catalog stores, her love of crafting and painting brought them to start their business of “The Cellar Door” out of their home with her husband Don for many years where they travelled around to many craft shows which included occupying nearby casinos. That led into owning and operating the Talents & Treasures with Joann Saxerud in Lisbon ND for five years. Jo finished her working career at Remily’s Supermarket in the Deli section.

Jo was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church

Jo is survived by her five children Deyon (Jim) Suchla, Leonard ND, Alanna (Dan) Schmidtke, Devils Lake, ND, Kara (Jen) Meslow, Walcott ND, Kathleen Groettum and Donnie Herbst both of Lisbon, ND. 12 grandchildren Lindsay (Dustin) Morro, Jade and Nate Suchla, Jordon (Jake) Elbert, Dani Schmidtke, Michael (Ronni) Carter, Kelsey (Tom) Lund, Aavyn Meslow, Kortney (Tim) Vesel, Kendall Groettum, Kasey Groettum and Karly Groettum, 16 Great grandchildren Zain, Isaac, Zoe, Cody, Aly, Bristol, Carter, Russell, Davis, Ivan, Ian, Isabella, Austin, Taylor, Shelby, and Payton. She is also survived by her sister Jane (John) Slater, LaPorte, IN and brother Dave (Sherri) Miller, Valparaiso IN

Jo is preceded in death by her husband Donald W. Herbst, her parents Joseph and Ceycelia Miller, mother and father-in-law August and Jesse (Smith) Herbst, her brother Michael J. Miller, daughter-in-law Kari Herbst, great-granddaughter Donn Lee Gilbertson.

Private services will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Lisbon, ND.
