Joyce Sue Olson

Joyce Sue Olson, age 71 passed away Friday, November 29, 2019 at Parkside Lutheran Home in Lisbon, ND after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Joyce was born March 17, 1948 in Dickinson, ND to Joe and Sue (Dassinger) Thomas. She graduated from Dickinson Trinity High School in 1966 and went on to study business for a brief time before taking a job as a legal secretary for a law firm in Dickinson.  

On October 4, 1980 she married Bryan Olson in Lisbon, ND. They began their life together in Dickinson before moving to Lisbon in the spring of 1988. The following year they purchased the farm southeast of Lisbon which became the place where she found her peace.

Within the walls of that farmhouse, she created the memories and needlework projects that we will carry with us.  Amongst the new adventures she took on as a farmwife, she always had hot meals at the ready, and a sewing project in the works. Her talents as a seamstress allowed her to create dresses for her girls when they were little, as well as numerous quilts, cross stitch pictures, wagon wheel rugs, and plastic canvas creations when her fingers were no longer able to manipulate the fine stitches. She also enjoyed traveling whether it was a road trip to see family or just a ride on the motorcycle or the side-by-side.

Her greatest joys were her children and grandchildren, her family, her church family at Redeemer Lutheran, and helping others. She was able to satisfy the latter during the time she worked at Muralt’s Mercantile and filled in as secretary at the Lisbon Elementary School.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Sue. She is survived by her husband, Bryan, and four children, Jason (Karissa) Hassebrock, Bismarck, ND; Blaine (Mariah) Hassebrock, Bismarck, ND; Julie (Dana) Martin, Lisbon, ND; and Bethany, Bismarck, ND; as well as six grandchildren, Jaxen and Kellen Hassebrock, Amelia and Arielle Hassebrock, and Joseph and Grace Martin. She is also survived by three sisters, MaryAnn (Mitch) Chaska, Peggy Thomas, and JoLynn (Lee) Magstadt all of Dickinson, ND.
